City of Niterói

City of Niterói

Brazil

The city of Niterói is widely recognized by its beautiful landscapes and its reputation as one of the friendliest cities in Brazil. With a population of 481,749 people and more than 450 years of history, its community reflects the diversity of the Brazilian people, comprising cultures of its native communities as well as people from various regions of the world. Located just 8 miles from the city of Rio de Janeiro, across the Guanabara Bay, Niterói was originally founded in 1573 by Araribóia, the leader of the Temiminó indigenous tribe. Only in 1834 it was given the name Nictheroy, which translates to “hidden water” in the native Tupi-Guarani language. Since then, the region developed consistently. Niterói’s endeavor towards a smart, human, and sustainable urban development has been the city’s main commitment for the last decades, mainly in the face of challenges imposed by the climate change crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.
