City of Austin

United States

Austin, the state capitol of Texas, sits on 362 square acres in the central part of the state. The city dates back to the 1830s, when the first Anglo-American settlers arrived in the area, which was then part of Mexico. Austin is now home to one million people, although that is a relatively recent result of explosive growth. Austin’s population is roughly 47% White Non-Hispanic, 32.5% Hispanic, 9% Asian, and 7% Black.

Historically defined by an abundance of water and green space, Austin tucks into the edge of the “Hill Country,” an undulating landscape of oak, mesquite, pecan, and cedar trees. The Colorado River flows through the center of town, and the Edwards Aquifer – one of the most productive and consequential water tables in America – feeds not only the Colorado but an abundance of creeks, streams, and springs as well.
